| Small
classes ensure individual attention.
Each age group is guided by a trained Teacher’s Aide.
The TA gets to know each child individually and builds a cooperative
spirit within the group. Many of our TAs come back year after
year and children look forward to renewing these friendships.
We offer arts for every interest.
Children have the opportunity to try Drawing, Painting, Cartooning,
Clay, Woodworking, Sculpture, and a variety of other media.
Our space is made for
art making.
Located in the heart of historic Concord, the Emerson Umbrella
offers a fully equipped clay studio, two air-conditioned art
studios, and a dance/movement studio. We also use our outdoor
space as an art and nature classroom.
Each week is unique, with activities designed to engage
your child’s creativity and artistic spirit. Plan around
a family vacation or other camp schedules. We are flexible and
will gladly accept enrollment for any combination of weeks.
Children enrolled in Summer Arts Under the Umbrella
get a little bit of everything each week, and those enrolled
in the full-day program have the opportunity in the afternoon
sessions to choose a medium they are particularly interested
in to focus on and learn more about. The weeks are not themed,
but the projects are different every week — so that children
enrolled in consecutive weeks will not be doing the same projects
over again (and sometimes themes develop spontaneously!)
Children are divided into groups according to age, which allows
our teachers to design projects appropriate to children's developmental
levels. The maximum number of children in each group is 12,
but usually groups are of 6 to 8 kids. Each group is guided
by a teacher's aide, usually an upper level high-school or college-age
art student as well as a younger "aide-in-training."
Everybody, both half-day and full-day students, has three art
classes in the morning, which include ceramics, 2-dimensional
arts (drawing and painting), and a mixed media class which can
introduce anything from sculpture to fresco painting to simple
printmaking to tie-dye. (A fourth class may be added to accommodate
a large enrollment, with the medium to be determined; all children
will get to try everything.)
After a lunch break and some time for supervised play, we have
two longer sessions in the afternoon, when children can choose
from ceramics, woodworking and drawing and painting/cartooning,
with occasional other special classes like nature crafts or
sun prints.
