The class will combine the painting of various subject matter with students’ special projects. The students work closely with the teacher and demonstrations are integral to the teaching. Work between classes is expected and discussed in class so that students learn problem-solving.

Whether one makes a contour drawing or a detailed study, the line is crucial. Whether the medium is India or sumi-e ink, pencil, brush painting or any other conceivable line-making thing, the line is unto itself.
We’ll take a look at the great line drawings of Picasso, Klee, Crete, and the caves at Lascaux among others. We’ll choose our subjects with care—human, still life, imagined—and bring their truth and essence to line. If we so like, we will celebrate and share our work with friends and family during the last class.

All basic elements of watercolor painting are covered in this class: knowledge of materials, seeing and drawing shapes, designing a meaningful painting, the basics of color theory, the attributes of pigments/paints, and how to mix paint to attain desired hues. The specifics of the class are strongly geared to students’ needs; demonstrations and one on one instruction are integral to every class. Students are encouraged to work between classes and to bring paintings to class for review.

This class will illustrate the fundamental application of stain and oil-based finish to wood surfaces. Although not commonly used in commercial settings, hand finishing is an approach and a treatment to wood that will prove enlightening to both beginner and novice woodworkers. Watching and participating in this finishing process from beginning to end and understanding the elements involved will foster a new and more dynamic appreciation for the vast varieties of treated wood we see on furniture, homes, and objects. We will be finishing a basic shelf, or a box with a hinge, or building a shadowbox for display purposes, or we might go on a field trip to a local antique market to hunt for potential conservation/restoration projects for next class… Sanding, toning wood with dyes, applying sealers and finish coats will be accompanied by thorough class notes which outline the process, tools and materials for future reference.
